AMW Capture #1096

Checkmate: Tip Leads To Endgame For Chess Master

Cops in Ft. Collins, Colo. tell AMW that convicted child molester Robert Snyder is finally back behind bars – and that he was up to his old tricks when they found him on December 4, 2009.

Authorities say that Snyder had received two reliable tips through both the AMW hotline and AMW.com saying Snyder had set up shop in Belize.

They say he was tutoring children in chess at Hummingbird Elementary school in Belize City.

“There were two tips that we got through AMW,” said Sgt. Paul Wood of the Fort Collins Police Department.  “The night of the show, a man who was in jail with Snyder said that he had mentioned going to Belize once he got out.  The next day, we received a credible tip from somebody whose child was enrolled at the elementary school where Snyder taught in Belize City.  The person gave a physical description of what he looked like, with an alias of ‘Augustine Rios.’ Sure enough, that was our guy.”

Police tell AMW that they searched the elementary school’s website and found a link to a Belizean chess association.

Lo and behold, a picture of Snyder sitting across a chess board from a young boy flashed up on the computer screen.

They say there was no doubt in their mind and Ft. Collins police then dispatched U.S. Marshals to work with Belizean authorities to take Snyder down.

Cops say the story gets even better though: reports indicate that Snyder married a Belizean police officer after he skipped town.

“The Assistant Superintendent of Police was the one who arrested Snyder,” said Sgt. Wood. “You generally wouldn’t have somebody that high in the ranks going to arrest someone unless he did, in fact, have ties to this Belizean police officer.”

Authorities say Snyder admitted who he was once taken into custody and that he knew he was wanted in the United States.

“He didn’t resist arrest and there were no problems,” said Sgt. Wood. “That’s not the type of personality Snyder is anyway.”

Police believe that Snyder had been in Belize close to 15 months and went there almost immediately after getting paroled and failing to register as a sex offender.

“He may have gone to Mexico first, then went to Belize,” said Sgt. Wood. “Snyder doesn’t speak Spanish and we suspect he chose Belize because it is an English-speaking country.”

Cops say the airing of Robert Snyder on America’s Most Wanted on November 28, 2009 was critical to this investigation which had hit a roadblock.

“Our leads were finished as far as this investigation was concerned,” said Sgt. Wood.  “There was no way we would ever be able to tie Robert Snyder to Belize without the help of America’s Most Wanted."

Sgt. Wood goes on to say that his record with America’s Most Wanted is now “three-for-three” for the Ft. Collins Police Department.

“For each of the three fugitives we’ve had aired on AMW, three were captured,” said Sgt. Wood.  “One was an alleged murderer and the other two, including Snyder, are alleged sex offenders.  We couldn’t have a better track record with that.  This is fantastic for our department and we look forward to working with America’s Most Wanted in the future.”

Robert Snyder Shipped Back to the US
posted (December 7, 2009)

Convicted US Child molester Robert Snyder – who went by the name Augustin Rios in Belize was sent back to the United States today where he will be treated as a fugitive after failing to keep up with the terms of his probation when he was released from a Colorado prison in 2007. This video of him was taken at the airport today where he was escorted by Belize police and then later picked up by a US Marshall who escorted him to Houston on a Continental Flight and from there to Colorado. We could not confirm what immigration status he had in Belize, but because he is a US citizen – he was presumably given an order to leave, expels from Belize.

According to best reports Snyder came to Belize in or around the last quarter of 2008 where he married a policewoman and started seeking out jobs as a chess instructor – which is the same career he had when he was in Colorado. According to US media reports, he used that profession as a means to get close to his young victims.

Snyder worked under his Rios name at a number of primary schools in Belize City where he was a paid chess instructor. That last name proved important because when background checks were done on that name they came up empty. It is believed that he changed his name in Mexico before coming to Belize. At this time, there have been no complaints against him in Belize.

The Belize National Youth Chess Foundation today sent out a strong release declaring that they had no association with Snyder and that he worked independently. The Youth Chess Foundation said they differed with him because he charges for chess instruction and the foundation strictly offers instruction for free.

Snyder agreed to serve a two year term starting in January 2007 in the Larimer County Detention Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. On August 24, 2008 Snyder was released from jail and was to start a 10-year probationary period and was required to register as a sex offender every 90 days. After his release, Snyder failed to register as a sex offender and did not meet with his probation officer and has been a fugitive ever since. Snyder was taken into custody by Belize police on Friday, December 4, 2009 in Belize City, Belize.

Snyder was featured on the television program, “America’s Most Wanted (AMW)” on November 28, 2009. Shortly after the program aired, AMW and Fort Collins police received a tip that Snyder was living in Belize under an assumed name and was tutoring kids in chess at a Belize City elementary school. Snyder is being deported from Belize and will be taken into custody by U.S. Marshalls upon his return to the United States and will be transported to the Larimer County Detention Center in Fort Collins.

Judge sets bond for chess master at $1.5 M

BY NATE TAYLOR • NateTaylor@coloradoan.com • December 19, 2009

Snyder's first appearance in district court came two days after he was returned to Larimer County from Texas, where he was taken after being deported from the Central American nation of Belize.

"The biggest thing is this is not just a significant flight risk, but a virtual certain flight risk," Williams said, explaining his rationale for setting such a high bond.

Police were able to locate Snyder in Belize, where he fled in 2008 after his release from jail and after being convicted of felony sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and two counts of misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact. His two victims in the case dating back to 2005 were both students at Snyder's local chess academy.

Snyder's bond was set at $1 million for his case in which prosecutors have filed to revoke his probation after he failed to begin sex offender intensive supervision probation in August 2008. Williams then set a $500,000 bond in Snyder's case where he's charged with felony failure to register as a sex offender.

Should Snyder be able to come up with the $1.5 million in cash, Williams ordered he be placed on ankle monitoring and enhanced pretrial supervision, be confined to his residence and have no contact with anyone younger than 18.

Prosecutor Cliff Riedel asked Williams to set the combined bond at $2 million while Snyder's attorney Joseph P. Fonfara asked for the bond to be a personal recognizance bond set at $100,000. Fonfara claimed a bond amount set at millions of dollars is oppressive to his client.

"It would be oppressive to the people of the state of Colorado should he be out and allowed to flee again," Riedel argued to the judge.

Fonfara argued his client was not a risk to the community, partially because when he was released from jail in 2008, he did not remain in Larimer County, instead fleeing to Mexico and eventually Belize.

During the hearing, Snyder also waived the right to have a hearing within 15 days regarding the prosecution's motion to revoke his probation, and he also waived his right to have a preliminary hearing within 30 days for the charge that he failed to register as a sex offender. Snyder maintained the right to still have both hearings.

Snyder was captured with the help of the television show "America's Most Wanted," according to Fort Collins police. Days after Snyder was featured on the show, a parent with children in an elementary school in Belize provided a tip to law enforcement that a man matching Snyder's description was teaching chess at the school.

Before locating Snyder, police believed he might be trying to stay active in chess, and Sgt. Paul Wood said he believed the fugitive was arrogant enough to continue to be around children ages 10, 11 and 12, which were the ages of his victims in Fort Collins.

Snyder was a world-renowned chess teacher and player and had written books on chess. Police say he used to charge about $40 per half hour for people to play chess against him on the Internet.

In Belize, Snyder had changed his name to Augustin Rios, and news reports in Belize indicate he had married a police officer after being in the country for about a year.

Fugitive child molester to be deported from Belize to the US

Published on Monday, December 7, 2009

By Oscar Ramjeet

BELMOPAN, Belize -- Robert Snyder, a child molester, who was wanted in the US for more than fifteen months and captured in Belize last Friday, is to be deported within the next few days.

Synder, who is a well-known chess master, who worked for actors Will Smith and Nicholas Cage, was jailed in Colorado for child molestation after a plea bargain, and on his release from prison in August 2008, he was ordered to register as a sex offender to meet his probation obligations, but fled the country instead.

He arrived in Belize using false documents stating he was a Mexican under the name Augustin Rios.

It did not take him long to secure a job as a chess instructor and during his relatively short period in Belize he married a sergeant of police.
The parents of one of the children he molested said that Snyder is slick and can quickly gain the confidence of people he comes in contact with, but Belize Police Commissioner Crispin Jeffries said on Sunday that there are no reports against Snyder of child molestation while he was in the country, but said that the travel documents he presented were forged.

Jeffries said that the US Regional Security Officer is working in collaboration with the local law enforcement agents to expedite the deportation process.

It is said that Snyder is an excellent chess instructor and has written a couple of books about the game.

Reports state that he was featured on the Saturday November 28 edition of "America's Most Wanted."

Most wanted list

Man added to wanted list
Police searching for ex-chess teacher convicted of sexually assaulting child
BY NATE TAYLOR • October 5, 2008

Police continue to search for a former Fort Collins chess teacher convicted of sexually assaulting a child.

Robert Snyder, 58, was released from jail and was supposed to register Aug. 24 for his 10-year probation sentence, as well as register as a sex offender, but he never showed up.

A warrant was issued immediately for his arrest, and he's now on the city's most-wanted list.

Snyder is also a world-renowned chess player, coach and author. He is a former western U.S. chess champion and qualified for the semifinals of the world correspondence chess championship.

Fort Collins police have an active investigation into Snyder's whereabouts, police spokeswoman Rita Davis said.

Snyder's probation requirements would have put him under global positioning system, or GPS, monitoring.

Snyder's former attorney, Fort Collins lawyer Andy Gavaldon, told the judge at Snyder's sentencing that Snyder accepted responsibility for his actions and knew he would have to deal with the consequences.

"I'm disappointed to hear that," Gavaldon said Friday when told by the Coloradoan that Snyder had disappeared. "I knew he was serving his sentence and didn't even know his release date."

Gavaldon said he stopped being paid as Snyder's attorney the day of his sentencing.

Snyder was not deemed a sexually violent predator by the state and no announcement was made about his release from the detention center, as was the case with two sexually violent predators that were released Monday.

Fort Collins resident Diane Fromme said she hosted a foreign exchange student who was under Snyder's tutelage and traveled with him to San Francisco for a chess tournament in 2006.

"He seemed to enjoy the club and never mentioned anything suspect or unusual," Fromme said of the exchange student. "Snyder might be completely reformed, but the fact that he's gone missing leads you to believe that he's not."

Robert Snyder Owns Chess For Juniors
POSTED: 4:50 pm MDT September 13, 2005
UPDATED: 2:13 pm MDT September 14, 2005

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A well-known chess instructor for kids was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual assault and police said they are looking for more potential victims.

Robert Michael Snyder, 50, of Fort Collins, Colo., is listed as the "Senior Master" with Chess for Juniors. Its Web site lists it as "one of the nation's largest and most active private chess clubs for youth." Snyder is the owner and sole instructor.

Police said they began a "lengthy investigation" after they received complains from children attending Snyder's chess camps about inappropriate touching and behavior by Snyder. Investigators also interviewed children and their parents and then obtained enough information for an arrest warrant.

Snyder was arrested Tuesday afternoon at the Scotch Pines shopping center in Fort Collins. He was jailed on two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and two counts of sexual assault on a child -- pattern of abuse. The alleged assaults occurred at his home on Silver Creek Drive in Fort Collins, according to police. The arrest warrant affidavit was sealed.

According to a recent article in the Fort Collins Coloradoan, Snyder also travels the world with children so they can participate in chess tournaments. According to a Denver Post article from February, Snyder has a children's playground in his back yard called "Fort Chess."

Snyder is author of several chess books published by Random House, which includes the bestseller "Chess For Juniors," and has written articles for "Chess Life" and "School Mates" magazines, according to his Web site. The Web site also said that Snyder taught the game to students such as actor Will Smith, and the son of actor Nicholas Cage.

Snyder is a former Western U.S. Chess Champion and qualified for the semifinals of the world correspondence chess championship, earning the highest score on the U.S. Olympic chess team, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reported in its Wednesday editions.

Police said they are continuing their investigation and would like anyone with information about this or other potential incidents to contact Detective Kim Cochran at (970) 224-6090.

Snyder was being held on a $750,000 bond in the Larimer County Detention Center.

The defense team for Snyder is better than even the O.J. defense team, and Snyder will again be exonerated. I'm certain that Mr. Labate will then persist in spreading the notion that Snyder is guilty.

Snyder is not willing to even reply to Labate's letter to the world, but I will be writing a lot about the trial and the police conspiracy that led up to that trial. And after it is over and Snyder is free to continue his chess lessons and book publishing, Mr. Labate can continue to express his sour grapes.

May I simply say about the case that Fort Collins has a very weak case. The boys cannot get their stories straight, and a jury with any intelligence cannot convict Snyder beyond any reasonable doubt. Of course, if the jury can be chosen by selecting idiots with the mentality of people such as (I won't say it), the prosecution might stand a chance.     C. Sendrey

Police: More Victims Possible In Chess Master Case

Snyder Taught Students In Fort Collins

POSTED: 11:19 am MDT September 15, 2005

UPDATED: 11:37 am MDT September 15, 2005

Fort Collins police say there could be more victims in the case of a chess teacher who's accused of sexual assault.

Robert Snyder was arrested Tuesday for allegedly engaging in inappropriate touching and behavior with two of his students in the past year. Police said the two alleged victims are boys between the ages of 11 and 13.

Wednesday, a judge refused to lower Snyder's $750,000 bond in the case.

Police said that dozens of calls have come in regarding Snyder, many from parents concerned about the charges against him. The police investigation was called "lengthy" by investigators.

Snyder owns the Fort Collins-based Chess for Juniors, which operates out of his home. Its Web site lists it as "one of the nation's largest and most active private chess clubs for youth." Snyder is the owner and sole instructor.

He was jailed on two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and two counts of sexual assault on a child -- pattern of abuse. The alleged assaults occurred at his home on Silver Creek Drive in Fort Collins, according to police.

The allegations aren't the first to surface regarding Snyder who moved to Colorado from California in 2000.

In 1983, he was found not guilty on four counts of sexual assault a California student. A judge dismissed the fifth count against him, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The charges were filed after the father of one of his students found Snyder and his son in the boy's room with a chair wedged against the shut door, the Times reported.

The not guilty verdicts came after a four-week trial and two hours of deliberation by the jury.

Snyder is the author of several chess books published by Random House, which includes the bestseller "Chess For Juniors," and has written articles for "Chess Life" and "School Mates" magazines, according to his Web site. The Web site also said that Snyder taught the game to students such as actor Will Smith, and the son of actor Nicholas Cage.

Snyder's lawyer said that his client is distressed about the charges and he expects Snyder to be vindicated.

Snyder's next court appearance is set for Sept. 22.

Chess coach facing sex assault charges
LARIMER COUNTY - Some children who attended a chess camp run by 51-year-old Robert Snyder accuse him of inappropriate touching and other behavior.

Fort Collins police arrested Snyder on Tuesday.  They say he'll be charged with two felony counts of sex assault on a child by a person in position of trust.  The assaults allegedly took place at his home.

Snyder is being held at the Larimer County Detention Center in lieu of $750,000 bond.  Police say they're continuing their investigation and would like anyone with additional information to come forward.

Snyder is a well known chess coach and the owner of Chess for Juniors.

Chess coach pleads guilty to sex charges
FORT COLLINS - A former chess coach accused of sexually assaulting three of his students pleaded guilty to two charges today and avoided any prison time.

Robert Snyder, 52, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault on a child and one count of unlawful sexual contact during a hearing in District Court. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Snyder will serve two years in the Larimer County Detention Center for the unlawful sexual contact charge and will spend the rest of his life on sex offender intensive supervised probation.

Snyder, who ran Chess for Juniors out of his Fort Collins home, originally faced four counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust plus two sentence-enhancing counts of sexual assault on a child, pattern of abuse.

Police said Snyder engaged in inappropriate behavior with three male students at his home, 2619 Silver Creek Drive, as well as at his parents' home in California and a hotel room in Atlanta. The plea agreement covers all three victims.

Snyder, who was taken into custody following the hearing, will be back in court for a formal sentencing next month.

Chess coach sentenced to two years in child sex assault case
FORT COLLINS - One of the boys molested by former Fort Collins chess coach Robert Snyder told a judge Wednesday that he didn't hate Snyder, but not because he'd forgiven him.

"He is dead to me," the 16-year-old said during the sentencing hearing. "How can you hate something that doesn't exist?"

Snyder, a world-renowned chess player, coach and author, will spend the next two years in the Larimer County Detention Center and at least 10 years after that on sex offender intensive supervised probation for performing oral sex on and inappropriately touching two male students and inappropriately touching a third. The sentence was stipulated in a plea agreement Snyder took earlier this year.

In January, Snyder pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a child and unlawful sexual contact to avoid going to trial on multiple sex assault charges. A conviction at trial could have put Snyder in prison for life.

A third young boy - whose father may be a professor at CSU - has come forward accusing a local chess instructor of molesting him, while friends of the chess master are alleging a police conspiracy.

The boy is the third accuser to allege that Robert Snyder, a best-selling author and owner of Chess For Juniors, sexually assaulted him during chess lessons.

Charles Sendrey, a self-proclaimed close friend to Snyder and retired tournament director for Chess For Juniors, said the latest accuser is the son of a CSU professor. Police would not discuss the identity of the third accuser and when contacted by the Collegian, the professor declined to comment and directed questions to police.

According to court records, the latest accuser came forward saying he was molested between July 2003 and May 2004.

"He came forward within the last couple of months," said Lt. Hal Dean with Fort Collins Police Services.

Sendrey said the boy came forward after his family read an article about Snyder's case in the Collegian.

When Snyder last appeared in court on Nov. 17, another count was added to his charges - he now faces a total of three counts of sexual assault of a child by a person in the position of trust and two counts of sexual assault on a child - pattern of abuse. Both counts are felonies.

Sendrey told the Collegian in a series of more than two-dozen e-mails that Snyder is totally innocent and victim to a police conspiracy.

He wrote in an e-mail sent Oct. 13: "I have access to all the facts on the Robert Snyder case. You will be amazed to learn that this is a 'set up' by the police to put Snyder out of business."

Sendrey continues to say that the Huntington Beach Police Department contacted Fort Collins police in 2000 when Snyder moved to Colorado from California to warn them Snyder was a sexual deviant.

In 1983, Snyder was acquitted for similar charges in Orange County, Calif., but, according to Sendrey, police called Fort Collins authorities because they wanted Snyder to suffer.

Huntington Beach police Lt. Craig Junginger denies Sendrey's allegations. He admits that a semi-retired detective on the force called Fort Collins authorities after recently reading about Snyder in a local newspaper to give them further information on Snyder.

The detective was not directly involved in Snyder's 1983 trial, but was part of a California-wide task force investigating sexual assaults, Junginger said.

John Sendrey, Charles Sendrey's son who spoke from his home in California, was part of Snyder's chess posse in 1985 when he was about 15. He credits Snyder with getting him the title of state chess champion and felt totally comfortable around the Olympian chess master.

"He made it a fun environment to hang out. I trusted him and did not suspect anything," John Sendrey said.

John Sendrey criticizes the media coverage that discusses the 1983 acquittal charges.

"Delving into the past, I do not think it anyway helps paint the picture," John Sendrey said.

Because Snyder was around children so much, John Sendrey admits his chess teacher displayed some odd quirks.

"He was a strange sort of person. He told corny jokes. I had, at times when he was not with kids, seen him a lot more normal," he said.

Charles Spine, one of the two original accusers in the 1983 case, says Snyder is a sexual predator who did molest him several times while attending chess lessons. Even though the 1983 jury did not find Snyder guilty, Spine says he was humiliated and affected for life.

"I was a victim. I was Snyder's prodigy. I had my picture in the paper as the next Bobby Fisher," Spine said from his home on the West Coast.

Charles Sendrey calls Spine an "inveterate liar" and believes Fort Collins police told Spine to talk to the Denver press.

Spine dismisses Snyder's 70-year-old friend calling him a "political whack-job" and "spin-meister."

"I had held out hope it was a passing perversion, a skeleton in the closet, something (Snyder) would definitely watch and not repeat," Spine said.

Spine is active in child advocacy charities and is currently married with three children.

He said: "I can tell you the actual incidents of abuse are still crystal clear in my mind."

The charges against Robert Snyder are grave. I have faith that the justice system is fair in caring for the victims and preventing future abuse.

Thank you for providing the opportunity to comment. You seem to prefer to be anonymous. I choose to give my name: Andrius Kulikauskas.

I was a chess student of Robert's from about 1977 to 1981, ages thirteen to sixteen or so.

Robert is one of the finest people I know, certainly among chess players. He's made a difference in hundreds of people's lives, helping them discover and foster their genius. I'm very glad that he's shared his gifts as an author as well.

Once, when I was his student, he used a chair to keep the door shut. He said this was because his mother had a habit of disturbing lessons.

Then he sat next to me, gazed at me and asked if I knew how special I was to him?

I told him angrily that I was very uncomfortable with him and he must sit on the other side of the board and keep the door unlocked.

Later, I told my mother. I was going to quit the lessons, and I thought it was very wrong what he did, and something should be done. She said that it was up to me, but inclined me not to judge too harshly. I did continue the lessons and he behaved correctly.

A few years later, he was charged in a rather similar situation, but he was found not guilty and a charge was dimissed.

Robert was, at heart, a child and his gregariousness was always childlike. I don't think our world has much place for that, but certainly he made our world better. He was always vulnerable, and I am sad that he hurt others who were vulnerable.

I think that Robert is creative enough and positive enough to find a way to apply his talents without focusing on children. I hope that our society is healthy enough to include somebody like Robert.

My feeling in these situations is that our society is not supportive of people like Robert who are struggling to make the best of the genetic predisposition they have been dealt. Our society is sick and we're not much interested to seek a cure.

Jesus speaks of hell as a place that will forever burn away, clean away all of our faults. I could wish that for all of us.

I hope yet that we all might have the impact that Robert has, and that together we might all enjoy heaven.

Thank you for allowing me to post here.

A Mistake that Still Makes Me Cringe

I blog over at Teacher Smackdown and am constantly doing Google searches to find stories about teachers and coaches abusing students. When I found this story, it sent chills up my spine. Why? Because it's something I should have know about, but didn't. And I was this close to sending my son into the lion's den.

Only a 40 minute drive north from us in Fort Collins, Colorado, Robert Snyder, 51, a world-renowned chess player, coach and author of Chess for Juniors: A Complete Guide for the Beginner, was teaching chess to children ages five to 17 in his home.

In April 2006, I looked into enrolling Nathan, who was then six, in one of Snyder’s classes. Nathan loves chess and I wanted to find a class where he could improve his skills and meet other kids who are interested in playing. I decided against it because it was too far away from our home and pricey.

But what really freaked me out that Snyder was arrested on September 12, 2005 on charges of sexual assault for performing oral sex on two male students and inappropriately touching them and another student. One of the victims was 11 and two were 13. Snyder had been freed on a $250,000 bond and kept teaching children out of his home until this year when his case went to trial.

I could have found this out by doing a simple Google search on his name. The news stories were out there on the internet, easily found. Yet I trusted him when his website (now pulled off the internet) mentioned that he supervised chess clubs in our school district. If the school district gave him access to students, shouldn't I trust him? Little did I know that they don't run background checks on people who volunteer in the schools.

Snyder pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a child and unlawful sexual contact to avoid going to trial on multiple sex assault charges that could have put him in prison for life. He'll spend two years in the county jail instead.

So now I Google the names (and all the variations I can think of) on all the people who coach my children, like their karate teacher Scott. I also make sure that I'm always in class and that the classes are taught in a public place accessible to any parent at any time. If there's ever a time when my kids go away to a tournment or game, my husband or I will be there chaperoning.

Suspect all. Trust no one. Check mate.
